Meetings

From September through May, ASFC holds Chapter Meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month except December featuring fascinating guest and member speakers and programs. We meet in the Visitor Center at Historic Bethabara Park on Bethabara Road. Social half-hour begins at 7:00 p.m. and the business meeting/program begins at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome, so please, come join us!

Topic: "Atlantic Flyway: From North Carolina to Nicaragua and Beyond"

Guest Speaker: Curtis Smalling, IBA Coordinator and Mountain Area Biologist, Audubon North Carolina.

One of our most popular presenters returns to tie his studies of Golden-winged Warbers and other neotropical migrants in Nicaragua to their summer residences here in North Carolina and our chapter's bird surveys at the New River Corridor IBA.

Topic: "Brown-headed Nuthatch Declines: Are Bluebirds to Blame?"

Guest Speaker: Dr. Mark Jackson, Prof. of Biology, Davidson College

Dr. Jackson will discuss his studies about nestbox competition among two of our favorite regional birds, the Brown-headed Nuthatch and the Eastern Bluebird. Carolina Chickadees also enter the drama. Be sure to learn about factors that may be causing local declines in the nuthatch population.

Topic: "Hovering Hummingbirds in 19th Century Art and Science"

Guest Speaker: Dr. Betsy Towns, Prof. of Art Hisotry, UNC School of the Arts.

Martin Johnson Heade was a 19th century American artist who created many beautiful paintings of one of nature's most fascinating creatures. Dr. Towns will discuss both Mr. Heade's work and the birds themselves.
