Chapter Meeting - November 25, 2008

Guest: John Gerwin, NC Museum of Natural Sciences
Topic: "Flooding, Philandering, and Philopatry: Twelve Years with a Population of Swainson's Warblers"

John Gerwin has worked at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences for 21 years and is currently the Curator of Birds. He oversees the bird collections and assists with pubic programs, exhibits, and ecotour trips.

John is currently working on several research projects including breeding biology of NC's yellow-bellied sapsuckers, multiple projects with Painted Buntings, a joint study of black-capped petrel breeding biology, in Haiti, and a taxonomic and genetic study of sapsuckers and black-throated green warblers.

John also coordinates NC surveys for a SE regionwide survey project of Painted Bunting. Additionally, he helps oversee a telemetry project on Kiawah Island and helps coordinate large-scale banding project in NC/SC for the Painted Bunting.

And every other year, John co-leads a group from Guilford College to Nicaragua! We are fortunate to hear about his study of Swainson's Warblers.
